The legal counsel for Chairman Wontumi, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has stated that his client is on police enquiry bail in the matter he has with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
This was revealed when Wontumi, accompanied by his legal team, appeared at the CID Headquarters on Monday, October 6, 2025.
His appearance followed an invitation from the Attorney General in connection with alleged illegal mining activities by Akonta Mining, a company he owns.
“… Let me put it on record that Chairman Wontumi is for now on police enquiry bail. He has been granted bail properly,” he said.

Meanwhile, Appiah-Kubi has given assurance that his client will fully cooperate with investigations into the alleged illegal mining activities involving Akonta Mining Limited.
His remark follows caution by the Attorney General, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, on Friday, October 3, 2025, that Chairman Wontumi would face arrest should he fail to appear before investigators by October 6, 2025.

Dr Ayine further stated that charges against the NPP Regional Chairman had already been signed.
According to the Attorney General, progress on the case had been delayed because vital dockets were concealed under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led administration.
