Sonia Ofori Ansong is the mother of Kelvin Kofi Moses, the 16-year-old student who died in 2016 Sonia Ofori Ansong is the mother of Kelvin Kofi Moses, the 16-year-old student who died in 2016

Sonia Ofori Ansong, the mother of Kelvin Kofi Moses, the 16-year-old student of Achimota Senior High School, who died as a result of medical negligence in 2016, has opened up about the death of her son in an interview with the BBC.

Speaking in a snippet of the interview, which was shared on Facebook on Monday, September 6, 2025, Sonia Ofori Ansong recalled the events that transpired before the demise of her son.

She said her son called and informed her that he was sick and had been taken to the sickbay of the school.

Following this, she continued, she said she kept trying for hours to reach the authorities of the school but rather received a text that indicated that he was well, only to be told that he was dead hours later.

“The first term Kelvin went to school, he did not come back. He called that he was not feeling fine; he has been to the school clinic, they’ve given him Ibuprofen.

“I called the housemaster, but he never picked my call. I sent messages; he did not reply, only for him to come and give me an answer the following day that ‘Kelvin is fine’,” she said.

She added, “The very fateful Friday afternoon, I had a call from the housemaster that Kelvin has been rushed to Achimota Hospital.”

Ofori Ansong indicated that life has not been the same since the death of her son, saying, “For two years, I decided not to work. Who do I live for, because he was all that I had?”

    Details about the case:

An Accra High Court, in May 2024, ordered the Achimota Secondary School Board of Governors, the Office of the Attorney General, and Dominic Danso, the Housemaster of Fraser House, to pay GH¢610,000 in damages for negligently causing the death of a 16-year-old student, Kelvin Kofi Moses.

The ruling, delivered by Justice Comfort Kwasiwor Tasiame, came nearly eight years after the death of Kelvin Kofi Moses, graphic.com.gh reported.

The judge who presided over the case, Justice Tasiame, determined that Achimota School was negligent in providing medical care to the student, a residential General Arts student, leading to his death.

“It is my conclusion that Dominic Danso, Housemaster of Fraser House, breached his duty of care to the deceased,” graphic.com.gh quoted Justice Tasiame in the judgment.

Sonia Ofori Ansong sued the school and the government after the death of her son and got legal support from Child Rights International (CRI).
