The Management Development and Productivity Institute (MDPI) has certified 106 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) across Ghana after their successful completion of the International Labour Organisation (ILO)’s Sustaining Competitive and Responsible Enterprises (SCORE) programme, with support from the German Development Cooperation.

Speaking at the certification ceremony on September 26, 2025, the Director General of MDPI, Prof Elijah Yendaw, described the impact of the initiative as “monumental,” noting that it has transformed workplace practices and improved compliance among participating businesses.

“Since the launch of Phase Four of the SCORE programme, 106 SMEs and over 400 individuals have benefited from training in workplace improvement methodologies,” he told journalists.

Prof Yendaw explained that the programme has helped businesses enhance communication between employees and managers, adopt cleaner and more organised workspaces, and implement fair wage practices.

“Many SMEs that previously did not comply with minimum wage protocols are now adhering to them. Some have even registered their staff with pension schemes and health insurance to ensure long-term security and access to healthcare,” Prof Yendaw said.

He added that MDPI has established a dedicated office for the SCORE programme and intends to sustain it with alternative funding sources, even if current donor support winds down.

Looking ahead, Prof Yendaw said SCORE aligns directly with the government’s flagship 24-Hour Economy initiative, which seeks to create jobs and drive growth through round-the-clock business activity.

“The basic tenets of SCORE—competitiveness, responsibility, and sustainability- fit perfectly into the 24-Hour Economy policy. We are committed to working with government and other partners to scale this programme nationwide,” he stated.

Prof Yendaw expressed optimism that future phases will include all regions, including his home region of Upper West.

The SCORE programme is a global ILO initiative aimed at improving productivity and working conditions in SMEs through practical training and capacity building.
