A Ghanaian traveller has detailed how he once received free accommodation at a five-star hotel in Turkey simply because of former Black Stars captain, Stephen Appiah.

According to the account shared online, the man was stranded with no place to stay until hotel staff learned he was Ghanaian. The concierge then offered him a room at no cost, explaining, “You have no idea what Stephen Appiah did for us.”

The incident highlights the remarkable legacy Appiah left behind in Turkey, where he is still regarded as one of the greatest foreign players ever to feature in the Super Lig.

Appiah signed for Fenerbahçe in 2005 after leaving Juventus and quickly became a fan favourite.

Over three seasons, he made 64 league appearances, scored 11 goals, and produced memorable moments, including a famous Champions League strike against Schalke 04. His leadership and professionalism endeared him to supporters across the country.

In 2018, Fenerbahçe honoured Appiah with a commemorative plaque, underlining his enduring status as a club legend. To many Turkish fans, he remains not just the best Ghanaian to have played in their league, but also one of the finest Africans in its history.

The recent story of a Ghanaian receiving VIP treatment because of Appiah’s name is yet another reminder of how the ex-Black Stars skipper is remembered in Turkey — not just as a footballer, but as a symbol of respect and admiration.
