The Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, has said that her mother, Jane Christie Donkor, the country’s first female Commissioner of Police, is a revered figure among women in the Ghana Police Service.

Eulogising the pioneering figure in Ghana’s law enforcement history in an interview, the CID boss shared personal reflections on her mother’s inspirational career journey and the impact she continues to have, especially on female police officers in Ghana.

“She wasn’t just the first Commissioner, but also the first female Deputy Commissioner. In the history of the service, if you were female, that is where your career terminated. Through a lot of hard work and breaking of glass ceilings, she was able to be promoted to the rank of Deputy Commissioner and later Commissioner of Police.

“This inspired a lot of women, because of what she did, we have a lot more women coming through that rank as well. It is good for women to know that they can rise up to that rank, be the best they can be, and compete with whoever is also on the table,” she stated.

COP Lydia Donkor is a distinguished officer with several decades of experience on her sleeve. She currently leads one of the most critical arms of the Ghana Police Service (GPS).
