Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has asserted that President John Dramani Mahama would be the person who decides on who would take over from him as the flagbearer of the party.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM, and shared on Facebook on September 23, 2025, Mustapha Gbande, who is also the Deputy Director of Operations at the Office of the Presidency, indicated that NDC members would vote for the person Mahama wants as his replacement.

“President Mahama is not going to contest. But let me tell you, President Mahama would have about 80% influence on who becomes the flagbearer of the NDC, whether you like it or not.

“He is the leader of the party. If he comes and tells me, ‘Mustapha, I’m going to support this person,’ that person is the one we would be choosing,” he said.

The Deputy General Secretary also refuted assertions that the current National Chairman of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Julius Debrah, are campaigning to become the flagbearer of the party with their recent activities.

He said that the ‘Thank You’ tour of Asiedu Nketiah is part of efforts of the party to stay in touch with its base after winning the 2024 election.

He also asserted that health walks being led by Julius Debrah were not to position him as a candidate to lead the party, adding that he himself urged the Chief of Staff to engage in such activities and not always remain in his office.
