Fifteen Prison inmates from the Reformers School at Kumasi Central and Nsawam Medium Security Prisons have successfully completed the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

All fifteen candidates pursued General Arts, offering Economics, Geography, Government, and ICT as their elective subjects.

The Eastern Regional Commander and the Officer in Charge of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison (NMSP), DDP. Patrick Thomas Seidu, in a recent meeting with the candidates of NMSP, commended them for their achievements and encouraged them to take advantage of the ongoing opportunities within the prison system.

He particularly highlighted the University of Cape Coast (UCC) supported tertiary education programme, which has already seen 72 inmates graduate with Bachelor’s degrees, with three getting First Class Honours.

He further applauded the efforts of the Nsawam Prison Education Unit, which has deployed officers to teach at the basic schools within the prison complex, leading to notable improvements, especially evident in the recently released BECE results.

DDP. Seidu also appealed to parents, relatives and close associates of these inmates to actively support and visit inmates who have chosen the path of education, stressing that family encouragement is vital in sustaining inmates’ morale, fostering self-reliance, and preparing them for successful reintegration into society.

The Service maintains that Education remains a pivotal tool for reformation and rehabilitation within correctional facilities. Research has consistently shown that inmates who pursue education during incarceration are far less likely to relapse into crime after release.

Guided by the Ghana Education Service, these inmates have demonstrated resilience and determination by completing their Secondary education.
