National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwart Dr Tony Aidoo has expressed his desire not to witness the party’s succession after President John Dramani Mahama’s tenure.

In an interview on Radio Gold on Thursday, September 18, 2025, the 76-year-old former Senior Presidential Aide and Head of the Policy Evaluation and Oversight Unit, cited weariness with Ghana’s political landscape for his candid wish.

“I don’t want to be here. Maybe by the time it comes to that point, I’ll be gone,” he said when asked about the next flagbearer.

Responding to whether he wanted to see the party’s future, he added reflectively, “No… I don’t want to… I’m old, though. I try, but I’m old. God has been good to me, but I wouldn’t mind if he takes me today.”

Dr Tony Aidoo, known for his sharp political commentary, emphasised that Mahama’s administration’s performance will be pivotal for any successor.

“Whoever is planning to take over from Mahama, a great deal depends upon the outcome of the Mahama administration,” he stated.

“If it does well, it inures to the party, and therefore it creates a wind on which the potential or prospective person can ride,” he added.

With President Mahama currently serving his constitutionally allowed term limit, there is growing anticipation over who will succeed him as the NDC’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

While the NDC seems to be pushing the issue aside, citing the early days of the Mahama administration, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the largest opposition party, is actively seeking its own answer.

Having lost the general elections in December 2024, the NPP has slated January 31, 2026, to elect a flagbearer.

At the close of nominations for the race, five individuals, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Bryan Acheampong—had picked up forms to contest in the upcoming election.
