Two Ghanaians featured as Tottenham Hotspur started their 2025/2026 UEFA Champions League (UCL) campaign with a 1-0 win over Spanish side Villarreal on September 16, 2025.

Spurs began with high pressing, creating chances in the initial stages and gaining an upper hand with their early goal.

Under no pressure, Villarreal goalkeeper Luiz Junior fumbled Lucas Bergvall’s cross into his own net, handing Spurs a dream start in the 4th minute.

The Spanish side pushed back in the game, with Nicolas Pepe coming close to scoring but was denied by Micky Van de Ven’s timely intervention.

Kudus Mohammed played a significant part of the game, posing a constant threat in attack with his pace and dribbling skills. Despite not scoring, his impact was felt.

Here is why Villarreal signed Thomas Partey despite fan protests

Meanwhile, his fellow Ghanaian midfielder, Thomas Partey, introduced in the 78th minute also made an appreciable contribution.

His interceptions and control in midfield helped Villarreal to avoid conceding another goal while facing Tottenham’s attacks.
