President John Dramani Mahama’s convoy was seen navigating through severe floodwaters at Atomic Junction in Accra on Friday, September 12, 2025, following continuous heavy rainfall.

The incident was captured in a video by Amisty TV.

Atomic Junction, a critical transport hub in Accra, has a history of flooding, with notable events such as the 2017 gas explosion that caused extensive damage and loss of life.

Friday’s downpour once again exposed the vulnerabilities of the capital’s drainage systems, as vehicles struggled to move through the waterlogged streets.

In the video, the President’s convoy is seen slowly making its way through the floodwaters, with water levels reaching the wheels of the vehicles.

Urban planning experts have long criticised the lack of efficient and sustainable solutions to manage the impacts of climate change in Accra.

Despite policies aimed at building resilience, the city’s infrastructure remains reactive rather than proactive, struggling to cope with heavy rains that frequently cause flooding.

President Mahama forms special taskforce to tackle flooding in Ghana

Ahead of the 2025 rainy season, President Mahama set up a seven-member Anti-Flood Taskforce to address Accra’s perennial flooding challenges.

The Taskforce, chaired by Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations), Stanislav Xoese Dogbe, began its work on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, with a comprehensive assessment of flood-prone areas across the capital.
