Mali head coach Tom Saintfiet has revealed that his desire to coach Ghana’s Black Stars was driven by passion for success rather than financial gain.

Saintfiet, who was among the applicants for the Ghana coaching job in early 2024, confirmed he held a four-hour discussion with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) before Otto Addo was appointed.

“I wanted to coach Black Stars, not for money, but to help Ghana achieve success in international competitions,” Saintfiet told Adom TV.

The Belgian, who previously guided The Gambia to back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, expressed no bitterness at being overlooked, instead praising Otto Addo’s work and hinting at a possible collaboration in the future.

“I would be glad to work with Otto Addo in Black Stars’ coaching,” he said.

Saintfiet recently faced Addo in the World Cup qualifiers, where Ghana edged Mali 1-0 in Accra, leaving Mali with the task of fighting through the remaining games to keep their qualification hopes alive
