World Athletics president, Sebastian Coe has disclosed that the 2025 edition of the event, hosted in Tokyo, Japan from September 13 to 21, 2025, will experience heat problems.

Japan is enduring its hottest summer since records began in 1898, with temperatures 2.36°C above average.

The opening day, featuring the 35km men’s and women’s race walk, is forecasted to reach 32°C.

Speaking on the weather conditions, the World Athletics president admitted that heat will be a challenge, and athletes should prepare for the conditions.

“I don’t think it’s any great secret; we do have some heat challenges in Tokyo. We had them actually at the time of the Games in 2021,” he said, as reported by the BBC.

Coe stated that the battle against climate change has fallen on sports leaders after governments failed to combat it decisively.

“Governments have not stepped up to the plate, and sport is going to have to take some unilateral judgments and decisions. If we’re committed to athlete welfare, then we should probably be openly committed to that,” he added.
