Ghanaian-American filmmaker Leila Djansi has expressed displeasure with certain institutions established in Ghana’s movie industry.

In an interview on Hitz FM, shared on X on September 9, 2025, Leila Djansi stated that she would dismantle all the guilds currently operating in Ghana movie industry.

She explained that these organisations play no crucial role in the movie industry, other than serving as gatekeepers.

“If you allow me to fix the Ghana film industry, the first thing I will do is to dismantle every single guild. I will collapse all of them because they are obsolete and just there as gatekeepers. They are not really doing anything,” she said.

Leila Djansi further noted that the popular film distribution platform, Opera Square, is the main reason the Ghana movie industry is facing a massive problem in the country.

‘The National Film Authority is politicised’ – Leila Djansi

According to her, the distribution platform failed to transition to digital platforms during a shift in era.

“Opera Square is the reason Ghana is in the distribution hell hole right now because when things were moving digital, they were still there 500 cedis every Monday to control how films were released. Nobody regulated them; somebody should have regulated them.

“When the digital switch happened, they didn’t understand modern trends… They didn’t move when things moved… Those same people have now infiltrated guilds and are still benefiting from the chaos,” she added.
