Sudan’s early momentum in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers has come crashing down after they suffered their second defeat in four days, losing 1-0 to Togo on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

Kwesi Appiah‘s side began their campaign brightly, drawing 1-1 with Togo in their opener before stringing together three consecutive wins against DR Congo, Mauritania, and South Sudan. That run briefly raised hopes of a historic qualification.

Since then, however, Sudan have faltered. Back-to-back draws against Senegal and South Sudan slowed their progress, and the September 2025 double-header has now dealt them a huge blow.

What Kofi Adams said after Ghana defeated Mali in the World Cup qualifiers

After falling 2-0 to Senegal on September 5, 2025, they were undone again on Tuesday when Sadik Fofana struck in just the sixth minute.

From there, Togo controlled the contest, leaving Sudan with little room to operate. Appiah’s men managed only two shots on target all game and never truly threatened to claw their way back.

The defeat leaves Sudan in third place in the group with 12 points after eight games, behind leaders Senegal on 18 and DR Congo in second on 16.

With just two fixtures remaining, against Mauritania and DR Congo, Sudan now faces an uphill battle to reach the playoffs, especially with Senegal expected to widen the gap when they meet South Sudan next.

What began with promise under Appiah’s guidance has now turned into a desperate chase, with Sudan’s World Cup dream hanging by a thread.
