The 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results have been released by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). However, the results of 41 candidates have been canceled due to examination malpractices. According to WAEC, these candidates were involved in offenses such as bringing unauthorized materials into the exam hall, collusion, and impersonation. As a result, their entire results have been annulled.

This decision has sparked concern among parents and education stakeholders, as the affected students will now have to re-sit the exams next year to continue their education. The Ghana Education Service (GES) has expressed worry over the situation and is working with WAEC to prevent future occurrences. GES also emphasized the importance of instilling academic integrity in students.

For the 41 candidates and their families, this outcome is particularly difficult. Some parents have called for leniency, while others acknowledge the need for strict rules to prevent cheating. The rest of the candidates who passed without issues are now preparing for senior high school placements.

WAEC’s firm stance on cheating highlights its commitment to maintaining the integrity of Ghana’s education system, as students and families move forward in their academic journeys.
