    Former National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah, has opened up about the deplorable conditions at the Borteyman Sports Complex.

    According to him, he paid a visit to the sports complex to watch a volleyball match, only to discover that there was no running water and that the washrooms were in a terrible state, emitting an unpleasant smell.

    He called on the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and other relevant sporting institutions to take immediate steps to address the issue and protect the government’s significant investment.

    The Government of Ghana, in its commitment to developing sports infrastructure, invested heavily in the construction of the Borteyman Sports Stadium. Yet, this past weekend was one of my saddest moments.

    I went to watch a volleyball competition at the Dome, only to discover that for some time now, water has not been flowing. The washrooms were in an appalling state, with an unbearable stench posing a health risk to all patrons.

    This is yet another glaring reminder of the poor maintenance culture that continues to plague our nation.

    The Ministry of Sports and Recreation, together with its allied institutions, must rise to the task of ensuring that facilities built with billions of cedis in public funds are properly maintained. A magnificent edifice without maintenance quickly turns into a liability and a wasteful expenditure.

    It does not take much to fix these challenges. How costly is it to sink a borehole and mechanize it with solar pumps? With the vast roofing space available, solar energy can easily be harnessed to ensure a constant and sustainable water supply. These are simple and practical solutions.

    It is unacceptable for state assets, constructed at such great cost to the taxpayer, to be left to decay—forcing government to repeatedly spend scarce resources on renovations. This attitude is wasteful, short-sighted, and must not be tolerated. Ghana deserves better stewardship of its resources.
