A member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Communications Team, Benjamin Gyewu Appiah, has likened the party’s current struggles to the decline of English football giants, Manchester United, insisting that the NPP will rebuild after its crushing 2024 Election defeat.

Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime, Appiah said the party is aware of the difficult times it is going through but is determined to bounce back.

“Political party administration sometimes is like football. Like Manchester United, they have had their good days and are having their hard times. These days, things are not going well. It has become a bit difficult after our loss. But we have to put the foot soldiers and everybody would have to come around, and then we put everything in place,” he said.

The NPP, after eight years in government, were voted out in the December 2024 general elections.

President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won the presidency with about 56.42% of the vote, while the NPP’s candidate, then Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, polled around 41.75%.

NDC’s Bernard Baidoo wins Akwatia by-election

It was the NPP’s worst defeat in the Fourth Republic, with the party securing just 88 parliamentary seats out of 276.

Their numbers were further reduced to 87 after losing the September 2025 Akwatia by-election to the NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo, who polled 18,199 votes against the NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu, who had 15,235.

For Appiah, the situation reflects a team in transition.

“We have a lot of work to do, but I can assure the ordinary Ghanaian, I can assure the NPP foot soldiers that we are going to put our house in order; we will keep restructuring. If there are changes that need to be done in the coming days, we will definitely do that,” he assured.

He stressed that the NPP, just like Manchester United trying to return to its glory days, will reorganize and position itself to win back the confidence of Ghanaians.
