Vice President and Flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has rubbed salt in the wound of the National Democratic Congress after the Supreme Court ruled to stay the ruling of the Speaker of Parliament declaring vacant seats of MPs who have filed to contest the 2024 elections on a different ticket.

The Speaker’s ruling on Thursday evening reduced the number of seats of the NPP, thereby granting the NDC side temporary majority status. However, in the midst of excitement by key NDC activists, including former President John Dramani Mahama, who rejoiced over the change, the Supreme Court granted an application to stay the Speaker’s ruling, which effectively halted the Speaker’s action and reverted the NDC side to its original status.

Addressing a large crowd of supporters at Nkawkaw on Saturday, Dr. Bawumia taunted the NDC Caucus that they had the majority side for “just 24 hours.”

“A few days ago they did something in Parliament and they said they were the majority side,” Dr. Bawumia said at a mammoth campaign event at Nkawkaw.

“Anyway, they got the majority for just 24 hours. That is a 24-hour majority. It didn’t last at all. The shortest living majority that I know of in history,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia also told the NDC that parliamentary majority is won at the polling station and “cannot be manufactured” in the House of Parliament.

“They should know that if they want majority, they should come to the polling station. Come to the constituency, win an election, and then go to Parliament. You don’t sit in Parliament and manufacture a majority for yourself,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia also warned the NDC that the NPP is poised to win an overwhelming majority in the next Parliament.

“We will meet them in the constituencies and we will meet them at the polling stations. What I can assure you is that from what I know; I have been to over 200 constituencies, I have campaigned on the ground, I have seen the data, and I can tell you that if we hold the elections today, NPP will have a decisive majority in Parliament. There is no doubt about it. If the elections are held today, the NPP will have a decisive majority. Not a majority, but a decisive majority in Parliament.”
