The build-up to this year’s Democracy Cup reached a new height on Tuesday morning, September 2, 2025, as the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, led a delegation to the Presidency to formally announce the commencement of the second edition of the tournament.

The Democracy Cup, instituted by Parliament in 2024, has quickly grown into more than a football fixture. It is a national project designed to celebrate unity, tradition, and the values of democracy, with football as the binding force.

Announcing the visit, Presidential Adviser and Special Aide to President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, described the initiative as an embodiment of “soft democracy,” emphasising the importance of nurturing Ghana’s democratic journey while using football to connect with citizens.

This year’s edition will take place on Friday, September 5, 2025, at the Legon Stadium, where Accra giants Hearts of Oak will face city rivals Great Olympics in the headline clash.

A curtain-raiser between Parliament and Judiciary, with Parliament’s team captained by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, will set the tone for the day.

Ahead of the matches, the Democracy Cup trophy is embarking on a citywide tour to promote awareness and excitement. It has already made stops at the NCCE headquarters and the Ga Mantse Palace.
