The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) are trading accusations of engaging in vote-buying in the ongoing by-election in the Akwatia Constituency.

Speaking in an interview at Apinamang Park, the Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, accused the Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Boadi, alias King Zuba; and the NDC Ashanti Regional Chairman, Nana Kwasi, of allegedly sharing money with voters.

“I received intelligence that Nana and the Mayor are sharing money — sika kokoo here — and you know CI 127 frowns on the sharing of money. I came, he actually called me, I inquired, and Nana said that what we did in Kumawu, that is what they are also doing, and I didn’t know what we did in Kumawu. He is from our stronghold; when we win, we develop Kumasi more, and I believe that Nana will not do it, but I don’t know whether he will continue to do it,” he said.

In response, the Mayor of Kumasi, who was also present at the polling station with the regional chairman, accused NPP elements of also engaging in the sharing of GH₵50 notes to voters, which he described as ‘broke money.’

“I’ve seen some GH₵50 sharing going on down there. If you want to come to the party with accusations, come with clean hands. They are sharing GH₵50 where the tree is; they are sharing broke money,” he said.

When asked if the NDC was also engaged in vote buying, the Mayor of Kumasi accused the NPP of having a history of engaging in vote buying.

“Have you seen me sharing any money? I am giving you evidence of money sharing on the side of the NPP behind that tree where the men are. They are sharing GH₵50, and that is what they are good at. When they are doing it, they couch their statements to shift focus onto their opponents, and then, behind the statement they have put out, they do what they are accusing you of doing behind your back, and that is what they are good at. These are our friends; they are very crafty when it comes to these games,” he stated.

The ongoing by-election at Akwatia on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, is occasioned by the death of the Member of Parliament for the area, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

The election is being held in some 119 polling stations across the Akwatia Constituency, with about 50,000 registered voters expected to cast their votes.

Ahead of the election, the Ghana Police Service, as part of its security arrangements, deployed 5,000 officers to cover the election.
