The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has clarified that President John Dramani Mahama’s removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was fully in line with the Constitution.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Akwatia Watch program on Monday, September 1, 2025, Kwakye Ofosu explained that the action followed Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which sets out the procedure for removing a Chief Justice.

He stressed that every step of the process had been observed since its initiation in March this year.

“The role of the President is clearly defined under Article 146, and since March this year, the President has strictly adhered to the constitutional tenets and has done everything in consonance with constitutional provisions.

“So, it must be emphasised that we have arrived at this juncture because of what the Constitution says, and not necessarily what the President believes,” he remarked.

President John Dramani Mahama, in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, has removed Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office with immediate effect.

Here is why Chief Justice Torkornoo was removed

The decision follows the receipt of the report of the Committee of Inquiry established under Article 146(6) of the Constitution to investigate a petition submitted by a Ghanaian citizen, Daniel Ofori, calling for the removal of the Chief Justice.
