The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Akwatia constituency has issued a stern warning to its political opponent, the National Democratic Congress, to stay away from its (NPP) planned vigil night programme scheduled for Thursday, August 28, 2025.

The NPP warned that the planned vigil night event which will precede the traditional one-week and 40 days observation of the passing of former Member of Parliament for the constituency, Ernest Kumi, is a solemn activity planned in the memory of the late MP and so they cannot welcome the NDC to it.

The spokesperson of the NPP campaign team for the upcoming by-election in the constituency, Kwame Owiredu, issued the warning while speaking in an interview with Channel One TV, citing security implications as one of the reasons.

He said, “This is a word of caution, we beg them in the name of God as for the one-week and the 40 days observation, we have formally invited them” indicating that the NDC will not be welcomed to the vigil on Thursday.

His caution came on the back of an assertion by the Second Deputy Eastern Regional Youth Organiser of the NDC on the same network that the NDC will, in solidarity, join their colleagues in the NPP to hold the vigil.

Not enthused by the NDC’s decision to participate in the event, Owiredu gave further reasons to support why they will not be entertained at the vigil.

“For tonight’s vigil, we believe that it’s a solemn moment for us as a party. It’s a solemn moment for our candidate and almost every activity will be under his name. We beg them in the name of God and for security implications, the NDC is not invited to this vigil,” he declared.

However, Owiredu maintained that the NDC has been officially invited to the main programme to mark the traditional one-week and 40 days observation of the late legislator, who passed away on July 7, 2025.

The Electoral Commission has scheduled a by-election in the constituency on September 2, 2025, to find a replacement for the late MP.
