Legendary Ghanaian footballer, Augustine Arhinful, has urged the public not to be perturbed about the alleged altercation that took place after the Black Stars lost to Sudan in Libya.

He stated that even though he does not know what caused the controversy, he believes that the emotions after the defeat possibly triggered it.

Augustine Arhinful noted that such actions are normal among footballers, especially when they have lost such a decisive match. Hence, the public should not be too concerned and leave the issue to rest.

Speaking in an interview with Happy FM, Arhinful indicated that the problems in the Black Stars are beyond what transpires on the pitch and need to be resolved.

“No one would be happy if they lose a battle. I don’t really know what triggered the action in Benghazi after the match. Sometimes emotions are high, especially when we have lost a game. Jordan is the most senior player among this particular team in camp, so obviously he might react, but maybe he went overboard.

“It could also be that there was some misunderstanding in communication, so we should not dwell so much on it. It happens plenty, but the problems in the team go beyond what we saw,” he said in Twi.

    Background

Black Stars duo Jordan Ayew and Lawrence Ati-Zigi were involved in a scuffle after Ghana’s disastrous defeat to Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

In a video sighted by GhanaWeb, the two players were spotted exchanging words in a heated argument and had to be separated by their teammates.

The incident occurred right after full-time while they gathered for their final moment on the pitch before heading to the dressing room.

The Black Stars suffered a catastrophic defeat to Sudan, losing 2-0 at the Martyrs of February Stadium.

Ghana now faces the huge adversity of not qualifying for Africa’s flagship competition in 2025 after earning just two points from four games and, as a result, sitting third in their group.

The Black Stars will now have to win their two remaining games of the qualifiers while hoping that Sudan loses their respective matches in order to avoid not qualifying for the AFCON for the first time in 20 years.
