The Ghana Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has urged authorities to strengthen security measures in hospitals to ensure the safety of workers.

According to the Greater Accra regional chairman of the GRNMA, Jefferson Asare, the appeal is not for police personnel to just be stationed at hospitals, but rather to ensure a quick intervention during emergency cases.

Speaking on Channel One TV on August 23, 2025, he said, “We don’t advocate that police should be stationed with us at the hospital. But at least, there should be some level of protection. At the blink of an eye, police should be able to respond. That is what we are calling for.”

Jefferson Asare further stated that internal security in hospitals must be strengthened to scrutinize access to sensitive areas such as emergency wards.

“Internal security measures must be heightened. Security should know who to allow into the emergency sector and how to manage access,” Asare stated.

“You can’t leave nurses to handle crowd control. Police should act as a buffer, not be stationed in the hospital, but be on standby for immediate intervention,”

    he added.

Jefferson Asare’s comments stem from a situation involving a nurse who was assaulted at Ridge Hospital’s emergency department on August 17, 2025.
