Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has urged colleges of education across the country to strengthen partnerships with universities in order to roll out undergraduate degree programmes.

According to gbcghanaonline.com report on August 24, 2025, he explained that such collaborations would make higher education more accessible to teacher trainees while addressing challenges of distance and limited facilities.

“We must create opportunities that bring education closer to our future teachers, rather than burdening them with barriers,” the report stated.

The minister made the call during the inauguration of new governing councils for ten colleges of education.

The institutions include Dambai, Akatsi, St Francis, Fosu, Our Lady of Apostles, Holy Child, Kibi, Presbyterian Women’s, SDA, and St Louis Colleges of Education.

According to him, closer collaboration with universities will not only improve the quality of teacher training but also enrich professional preparation.

“By aligning our colleges more closely with established universities, we will enhance the standards of teacher education and equip our trainees with modern skills,” the report indicated.

He also noted that such partnerships would give teacher trainees more flexible options to pursue their studies.

“A teacher trainee in Fosu, for example, should not be disadvantaged simply because of geography or infrastructure. Through partnerships, we can provide flexible academic pathways for all,” it said.

Haruna Iddrisu challenged the new governing councils to take leadership in this transformation.

“Your role goes beyond administration. You are to be vision bearers who can steer these colleges into stronger institutions that produce the kind of teachers Ghana needs,” the report said.

The minister further assured the institutions of government’s support in strengthening facilities and policy frameworks that would make the partnerships a reality.

“Government is ready to back these initiatives because we know that the future of our education system rests on the shoulders of well-prepared teachers,” it stressed.
