The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters in Accra turned into a rallying ground on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, as hundreds of fans of dancehall star Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr, popularly known as Shatta Wala, thronged the premises to show their solidarity during his detention.

Fans on motorbikes, chanting and smoking

Many of the fans arrived at EOCO on motorbikes, chanting his name and accusing authorities of “witch-hunting” the musician.

Some were even captured smoking openly at the premises while waiting for news of their idol’s fate.

“We will stay here till our king is free,” one fan shouted, as others waved placards and sang Shatta Wale‘s hit songs.

Several supporters claimed they spent the entire night outside EOCO until the artiste’s release.

    Bullet’s weighs in

Industry players echoed the show of support. Ricky Nana Agyemang, popularly known as Bullet, manager of late singer Ebony, described the arrest as unfair.

“Shatta’s arrest is nothing but a witch-hunt,” he alleged.

    Shatta Wale speaks after release

Shatta Wale was released after meeting bail conditions tied to investigations into his yellow 2019 Lamborghini Urus.

Initial reports suggested his bail was set at GH¢10 million with two sureties, but it was later reviewed to GH¢5 million.

After his release, the self-styled “One Don” went live on TikTok to thank his fans, team, and EOCO officials.

“One Don is safe, and I’m home now. I just want to say a big thank you for supporting me and being around me in times like this,” he said.

He also commended EOCO staff for their professionalism, “At least when I came there, you really took me through the rightful processes… I just want to say God bless you. Mr Raymond Archer, I want to thank you so much for your understanding.”

    Why EOCO is investigating

Shatta Wale was detained after voluntarily appearing at EOCO with his lawyer, Cephas Biyuo.

His arrest is linked to an ongoing probe into the Lamborghini Urus, which was earlier seized on suspicion of being tied to a broader $4 million financial scandal in the United States.

Investigators are also examining whether there were breaches of Ghana’s tax regulations relating to the luxury vehicle.

Supporters of Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale gathered at the offices of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) following his detention over an alleged investigation into his tax obligations.
