Nicknames have become very popular in the world of sports because it is easy for brand projection and also for supporters who might struggle to pronounce the official names of some of the biggest icons in the game.
Almost every footballer in the world has a nickname, some get to chose their own but others are given specific nicknames by fans or the media because of their skill set and what they do with the ball on the pitch.
There are others who have also chosen to shorten their names to make it simple on their jerseys, scoreboards and highlights reels.
The late Pele revealed that he sticked with his nickname because it was easier to market himself with it than using his real name “Edson Arantes do Nascimento”.
