Ghanaian dancehall star Shatta Wale, known in private life as Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., has been detained by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) in connection with an ongoing investigation into his tax obligations and assets.

A statement issued by his management, through his publicist Sammy Flex, confirmed that the award-winning musician voluntarily appeared at EOCO headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

The statement added that he was accompanied by his lawyer, Cephas Biyuo, to assist investigators with inquiries relating to the purchase of a luxury vehicle.

The statement also assured fans and the general public that his legal team is fully engaged and actively working with the authorities to resolve this matter while calling on the SM Family and well-wishers to remain calm and avoid speculation. Management also noted that discussions with EOCO will continue on Thursday morning.

This development follows weeks of headlines surrounding a high-profile seizure of Shatta Wale’s 2019 Lamborghini Urus. Earlier this month, EOCO, in collaboration with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Department of Justice, confiscated the luxury vehicle from his residence at Trassaco Valley Phase 1 in Accra.

Authorities stated that the car was part of assets traced to convicted Ghanaian fraudster Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is currently serving an 86-month prison sentence in the United States for a $4.7 million money-laundering scheme.

EOCO explained that the Lamborghini was identified during an international asset recovery operation after Amuah was found to have laundered stolen funds through shell companies in the U.S. The seizure was carried out at the request of American authorities.

Shatta Wale, however, has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. He insists he legally acquired the car for US $150,000 and was unaware of any fraudulent ties to its previous ownership. The musician also accused EOCO’s leadership of heavy-handed tactics during the operation.
