On August 20, 1995, the Black Starlets of Ghana etched their names into football history with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Brazil in the final of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Ecuador.

It was a clash that lived up to every expectation, the “Brazilians of Africa” facing the true samba kings of world football.

Played at the Estadio Monumental in Guayaquil, the match was a rollercoaster of emotions. Ghana struck first in the 39th minute through Baba Sule, whose effort silenced the Brazilian fans and gave Samuel Ardey’s boys belief.

Just before the halftime whistle, Abu Iddrisu doubled the lead with a cool finish, and Ghana went into the break 2-0 up, brimming with confidence.

But Brazil are never beaten easily. Within two minutes of the restart, Juan pulled one back, sending jitters through the Ghanaian camp. The response, however, was swift and emphatic. Captain Emmanuel Bentil stepped up just two minutes later, restoring Ghana’s two-goal cushion at 3-1 in the 49th minute.

Incredibly, four goals were scored in the span of just 10 minutes, making the contest one of the most exciting finals in the tournament’s history.

Brazil pressed forward relentlessly, and Marco Antonio’s strike in the 90th minute set up a nervy ending. Yet, Ghana’s resolve held firm. The final whistle sparked jubilation as the Starlets celebrated a famous victory, securing the nation’s second U-17 World Cup title after their first in 1991.
