The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced a by-election for the Tamale Central Constituency, following the passing of its Member of Parliament (MP), Dr Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim.

In a statement on August 19, 2025, the commission indicated that the by-election will be held on September 30, 2025, in accordance with Article 112 (5) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the conduct of a by-election within 60 days after a parliamentary seat becomes vacant.

“The Electoral Commission wishes to announce for the information of the General Public that, following the unfortunate death of the Member of Parliament for the

Tamale Central Constituency: Hon Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim, the seat of the Constituency in Parliament has become vacant.

“In accordance with Article 112 (5) of the Constitution, as amended, the Electoral Commission will hold a By-Election in the Constituency on Tuesday, 30th September 2025,” the statement said.

It further indicated that; “Accordingly, the commission will receive nominations from prospective candidates for the election of a Member of Parliament for the said constituency. The nominations will be received at the Tamale Metropolitan Office of the Commission from 8th September 2025 to 10th September 2025 between the hours of 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on each day.

“Interested Candidates are required to download the Nomination Forms from the Commission’s website (www.ec.gov.gh) from 19th August 2025 to 10th September 2025,” part of the statement said.

According to the EC the filing fee for the nomination has been pegged at GH₵10,000 per candidate.

However, female aspirants and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) will pay a reduced fee of GH₵7,500.

The by-election follows the death of Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim, who was serving as the MP for Tamale Central.

Murtala was among 8 individuals who all died in a Z9 helicopter, which belonged to the Ghana Armed Forces.

The crash claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna; former Central Regional Minister, Samuel Sarpong and Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu and Sgt Ernest Addo Mensah.
