The Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Eunice Biritwum, has underscored the need for Ghana to adopt a more sustainable cooling solution, warning that rising demand for air conditioning contributes to environmental degradation if not addressed.

Speaking at the launch of the Ghana Green Cooling Project on August 18, 2025, Biritwum called for a shift towards climate-friendly alternatives as the surest best to transition Ghana.

“As the demand for cooling increases, we face a crucial decision. We can either opt for a business as usual scenario and experience continued years of elevated emissions or we can opt for a better solution. Green cooling that aligns with our climate goals, energy efficiency targets and sustainable goals,” she stated.

She also affirmed the commission’s support in adopting the highly energy efficient sludge air conditioners that utilise R290, a natural refrigerant known for its low global warming potential.

“We at the Energy Commission wholeheartedly endorse the transition to highly energy efficient sludge air conditioners that utilise R290, which is a natural refrigerant with minimal global warming potential and which provide an efficient solution, delivering excellent performance and while significantly lowering emissions and energy consumption,” she said.

She added that “The Energy Commission is a critical partner in facilitating this transition. Through our minimum energy performance standards or MEPS and energy labelling regulations, we have established clear criteria to limit the entry of inefficient and environmentally damaging appliances into our market.”

This initiative forms part of a wider strategy to enhance energy efficiency in Ghana, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and ensure a more sustainable energy future.
