The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has admitted that the increasing rate of accidents, particularly on the Kumasi-Accra Road, is “alarming.”

According to Pearl Adusu Sateckla, Public Relations Officer of the NRSA, the situation is “disturbing.”

Speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem, she said, “It is true. The rate of accidents this year is alarming, particularly on the Accra-Kumasi Road. We would also admit that the weather has changed; we are witnessing foggy conditions.

The Kumasi Road is a forested and mountainous area, and because of that, the fog there is extremely heavy.”

She stressed that drivers need to exercise sharp judgment to prevent accidents, especially during this period of unfavorable weather.

The PRO also urged drivers to ensure their vehicles are in good condition, avoid indiscipline, and strictly adhere to safety measures.

“I will urge our drivers to remember that if the weather or system is not good, they must have sharp judgment and maintain discipline on our roads. This is not the period to misbehave. This is not the period for overspeeding because the weather is not favorable,” she emphasized.

Adusu Sateckla further advised that vehicle components such as windscreens, wipers, mirrors, and tires should function effectively.

She also cautioned drivers to avoid traveling at dawn, unnecessary overtaking, and distractions.

“Drivers must avoid distractions and remain fully concentrated on the road. Pay close attention to your surroundings to spot potential hazards like potholes. It’s safer to avoid traveling at dawn and instead travel during the day when visibility is better,” she noted.
