Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President, George Afriyie, has delivered a scathing critique of current GFA President, Kurt Okraku, calling him a “dictator,” in response to the GFA’s Executive Council approving a constitutional amendment extending the presidential term limit to three four-year terms.

The motion was passed at the GFA’s 31st Ordinary Congress at Prampram, on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, with an overwhelming majority – 114 of the 124 voting delegates in favor of allowing future presidents to serve up to 12 years in office.

The amendment also introduced a second vice-president position, which must be held by a woman.

Speaking on Sporty FM, Afriyie sharply criticised the process, likening Okraku’s leadership style to that of a dictator.

“You go before a dictator like Kurt. What he is doing is more like a dictator. He says, ‘Whoever is in support of this motion, raise your hands.’ That’s how this amendment was done,” Afriyie stated, rejecting the manner in which the motion was pushed through.

This is not the first time Afriyie has publicly opposed Okraku.

As a former GFA vice president and a veteran football administrator, he has previously challenged aspects of governance within the association.

Critics of the amendment warn that such a move erodes internal checks and risks consolidating power in the hands of a single individual, potentially undermining democratic governance within Ghanaian football.
