    El boxeador japonés de 130 libras Shigetoshi Kotari (8-2-2, 5 KOs; amateur 50-23) falleció tras un accidente en el ring a las 10:59 p.m. del viernes 8 de agosto. Fue solo seis noches después de que empatara en dos asaltos (115-113, 113-115, 114-114) con el campeón defensor Yamato Hata en busca del título superpluma de la OPBF (Federación de Boxeo Oriental y del Pacífico) en el Korakuen Hall de Tokio el sábado pasado. Kotari, graduado de la Universidad de Nihon a sus 28 años, lideraba en puntos después del octavo asalto (77-75 dos veces, 78-74 todas a su favor) en el sistema de puntuación abierto. Sin embargo, pareció perder ritmo y perdió su acumulación de puntos en los últimos cuatro asaltos, lo que resultó en empate.

    El año pasado presenciamos otra tragedia en el ring. El retador de peso gallo de la JBC, Kazuki Anaguchi, no logró arrebatarle el cinturón nacional a Seiya Tsutsumi en un agotador combate el 26 de diciembre de 2023, permaneció hospitalizado más de un mes y falleció el 2 de febrero.

    La Comisión Japonesa de Boxeo (JBC), ahora a cargo de la administración de la OPBF, anunció el inicio de una investigación rápida y exhaustiva y la consideración positiva de reducir la frecuencia de combates de 12 asaltos a 10 asaltos en las peleas por el título de la OPBF.
