Villarreal CF have officially signed Ghanaian midfielder, Thomas Partey on a free transfer, but the move has sparked backlash due to the player’s ongoing legal troubles in the United Kingdom.
The Spanish club confirmed Partey’s arrival on Thursday, August 7, 2025, stating the 32-year-old will join the squad at their training ground on Thursday ahead of the 2025/26 season.
In their official statement, Villarreal praised Partey’s qualities, describing him as a “complete midfielder” with “great stamina and exceptional physical attributes.”
The club highlighted his past success with Arsenal, Atlético Madrid, and the Ghana national team, where he has earned over 50 caps.

However, the announcement also addressed the legal storm surrounding Partey. The former Arsenal man is currently facing five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in the UK, related to alleged incidents between 2021 and 2022.
He has denied all charges and is expected to appear in court later this year.
“Due to the law in England in relation to ongoing proceedings, the club is unable to comment further,” the club stated, but reiterated their respect for the principle of presumption of innocence.
Despite the legal uncertainty, Villarreal’s decision to proceed with the signing has drawn heavy criticism from sections of their fanbase.
Hundreds have voiced outrage online, with petitions circulating demanding the club reverse the transfer.
Many have labelled the move as “a stain on the club” and accused the management of placing sporting success above ethics.
Villarreal concluded their statement by reaffirming their commitment to diversity and the condemnation of “all acts of violence in all its forms, including gender-based violence.”

Partey joins after a five-year stint with Arsenal, where he made 167 appearances, won the 2023/24 Community Shield, and helped the Gunners to multiple top-four finishes.
