Football administrator, George Afriyie, has said he will petition President John Dramani Mahama over the Ghana Football Association (GFA)’s bid to extend the presidential term limit for Kurt Okraku to remain in office.

According to him, extending the GFA presidential term limit to three terms does not augur well for football in the country, as it would give too much power to one individual for an extended period.

Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM on August 6, 2025, Afriyie fumed that the GFA should be concerned with elevating the standards of football in the country rather than occupying the position for an extended period.

“Why don’t we think about doing things right to get Kotoko and other local clubs to play in the FIFA Club World Cup? Instead, he [Kurt Okraku] is thinking about a third term. This worries me, so I will write to the government and the President of Ghana because he is the highest spender on football in the country. I will do that and copy the media as well,” he said.

Afriyie, who had contested for the GFA presidential position in the past, criticised Okraku for seeking to reverse a decision by the Normalisation Committee on the two-term limit when he had earlier agreed with it.

“The Normalisation Committee has brought us this far. Kurt was part of us when we accepted the proposal from FIFA statutes, which stated that we would align the presidency with that of the constitution of Ghana. Other countries attempted this and failed. The former Kenya FA president, after two terms, wanted to change the statutes and run for another term, but it didn’t work,” he added.

This development comes after FIFA approved the GFA’s proposal to extend the presidential term to three terms, with Okraku reportedly likely to run again.
