Ghanaian swimmer, Nubia Adjei, has made history at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, breaking the national record in the women’s 50-meter butterfly with a time of 28.82 seconds.

The remarkable performance, achieved during Heat 4 of the event, eclipsed the previous record of 29.14 seconds set by teammate Joselle Mensah, marking a significant milestone for Ghanaian swimming community.

Adjei, already the national record holder in the 100m backstroke, showcased her versatility and prowess in the pool with another record.

Her 50m butterfly time secured a third-place finish in her heat, though it was not enough to advance to the semi-finals.

The 50m butterfly event, held at the World Aquatics Championships Arena at the Singapore Sports Hub, saw fierce competition, with American Gretchen Walsh claiming the gold medal in 24.83 seconds, followed by Australia’s Alexandria Perkins (25.31) and Belgium’s Roos Vanotterdijk (25.43).

This record-breaking finish, further solidifies Adjei’s status as one of Ghana’s top swimmers since her debut for the national team in 2020.

In addition to her 50m butterfly performance, Adjei competed in the 50m backstroke, finishing 10th in Heat 3 with a time of 32.23 seconds.

Her efforts contributed to Ghana’s strong display at the championships, where the team demonstrated depth and potential on the global stage.

The Ghanaian contingent, led by team captain Abeku Jackson, also included Olympian Harry Stacey and Joselle Mensah, who set two new national records in the 50m freestyle (26.48 seconds) and 100m freestyle (58.98 seconds).

The quartet of Adjei, Mensah, Jackson, and Stacey competed in the 4x100m mixed medley relay, finishing 6th in Heat 2 with a time of 4:13.77, though they did not start in the 4x100m mixed freestyle relay.
