George Afriyie, a former Vice president of the Ghana Football Association, has reacted to the controversy surrounding the GH¢1 million support promised to each club competing in the 2025/2026 Ghana Premier League season.

According to George Afriyie, the GH¢1 million support promised to each club was a fulfilled campaign promise made by President John Dramani Mahama, hence the presence of the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, and the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, at the unveiling of the Adesa Productions and GFA partnership on Thursday, July 31, 2025.

Afriyie’s comment comes on the back of the statement made by Prosper Addo and Henry Asante Twum, the General Secretary and Director of Communications respectively, at the GFA that the money promised to clubs is not from the government.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, George Afriyie stated emphatically that the GH¢1 million support promised to each club is rather from the government.

“We know how sponsorships are announced in this country and we know that the sports ministry and GFA doesn’t collaborate on sponsorship announcements.

“The money is coming from the government. They are just fulfilling a campaign promise they made last year. That is why the Chief of Staff and the Majority Leader were present during the announcement,” George Afriyie said.
