Popular Ghanaian stand-up comedian, Lekzy DeComic, has expressed frustration with government’s excessive taxation of creatives.

In a discussion on GhanaWeb’s X Space, Lekzy DeComic noted that the government has a habit of overtaxing shows and events organised by creatives, leading to low profits after the events.

“The government that we are expecting holds us down one way or the other through taxation; it is draining us. If I sell a ticket for 100 cedis, the government takes 21 cedis.

“No matter the number of people that show up, it is deducting whatever amount per ticket, so we are not getting support from the government, and corporate Ghana… So it is like you are doing everything from your pocket and pumping it into the system,” he said.

The stand-up comedian also claimed that event organisers are making little to no profit due to the taxes charged per ticket.

Lamenting further, he said the Ghanaian system is designed as though individuals are working for the government.

“If you can ask any event organiser in Ghana, they will tell you that they are not necessarily making any profit or breaking even on the shows they do because the system has been designed in such a way that sometimes you are working practically to work for the government,” he added.
