World football’s governing body, Federation of International Football Association (FIFA), has officially approved a request from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to increase the presidential term limit from two to three terms.

This change will bring Ghana’s football leadership structure in line with FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Previously, the GFA president could only serve two terms in office, even though other members of the Executive Council, of which the president is a part, were permitted to serve up to three terms.

This long-standing contradiction in the GFA’s statutes is now on course to be corrected, following years of consultations and formal procedures.

According to GFA General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo, the idea did not originate from the Association’s leadership but from its broader membership.

“The decision to extend the GFA presidential term in office was proposed by clubs, RAG leadership, and other bodies that are all members of congress.

“The decision was not made by GFA, and this proposal to extend the mandate of the president was made three years ago,” he told Asempa FM.

This means the committee started work by reviewing all the proposals submitted by members.

To ensure inclusiveness, it issued an open invitation for input from across the football pyramid, including clubs in the Ghana Premier League, Division One League, Women’s Premier League, and the Regional Football Associations (RFAs).

The proposal to extend the presidential term limit is expected to be formally tabled at the next GFA Congress, scheduled for Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

If it receives the required support, the change will officially be enshrined in the GFA’s governing documents, opening the door for any sitting or future president to serve up to three terms in office.
