The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has criticised the John Dramani Mahama-led government, accusing it of orchestrating state-sponsored attacks on citizens.

In a lengthy post on X on Friday, August 1, 2025, Ahiagbah expressed concern over incidents involving some security enforcement agencies allegedly attacking citizens, particularly referencing the Ablekuma North rerun, where some journalists and politicians were reportedly brutalised.

According to him, these isolated incidents could undermine and pose serious threats to the country’s democracy.

“Sir, there is grave concern among the citizens regarding the increasing use of state power to arrest, detain, and violate the rights and liberties guaranteed to Ghanaians. The prevailing sentiment is that your government is using state authority to target political opponents, journalists, and citizens in general. This misuse of power to intimidate, harass, and silence dissent is detrimental to our democracy and your legacy.

“Reflecting on the arrests, orchestrated detentions of political opponents, and the widespread abuse of journalists and citizens, especially during the parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North, I wonder about the essence of democracy in this Fourth Republic. What is democracy without opposition or dissent?” he queried.

Ahiagbah further indicated that democracy allows people to freely express their views without fear or intimidation.

However, he added that attempts to silence people’s views and expressions could undermine democratic governance.

“Democracy, in its essence, embodies dissent and opposition. Therefore, a democracy worthy of the name cannot exist without it. Attempts by your administration to silence citizens using the state’s power of arrest to instill fear undermine the very concept of democracy as an enterprise built on dissent,” he said.

He urged the president to take decisive actions to address these issues.

“President, these sentiments may not be conveyed in your briefings, but they are causing significant dissatisfaction and have significantly eroded your goodwill and political capital. Those around you may tell you otherwise, claiming you are the most remarkable president Ghana has ever had and that you enjoy unprecedented support from the people. However, the truth is that while you are an outstanding Ghanaian, the reality of your popularity and goodwill is spent,” he added.
