President Mahama called on the minister to prioritise recruiting athletes into the security agencies President Mahama called on the minister to prioritise recruiting athletes into the security agencies

In a bold move to recognise the potential and discipline of athletes in the country, President John Dramani Mahama has called on the interior minister, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, to prioritise sportsmen and women in their recruitment into security services.

The directive, which underscores the administration’s commitment to harnessing the talents of youth, aims to create opportunities for athletes while strengthening the nation’s security apparatus.

Addressing the Black Queens at the Jubilee House, President Mahama highlighted the unique qualities that athletes bring to the table, including physical fitness, mental resilience, teamwork and discipline—attributes that align seamlessly with the demands of security service role.

“Our sportsmen and women have consistently demonstrated dedication, strength, and patriotism on national and international stages. In the past, when sportsmen and women are recruited into the security services it gives them the opportunity, equipment and facilities to train to improve themselves,” Mahama stated.

The President’s call comes at a time when Ghana is seeking innovative ways to address unemployment among its youth while bolstering the capabilities of its security forces.

By prioritising athletes, the government aims to tap into a pool of highly motivated and physically capable individuals who can contribute to national security while pursuing stable careers.

Athletes, particularly those who have represented Ghana in disciplines such as football, boxing, athletics, and other sports, often face limited career prospects after their competitive years.

By opening doors to security services like the Ghana Police Service, Military, Immigration Service, and Fire Service, the government is providing a pathway for these individuals to continue contributing to the nation.

Security services in Ghana require personnel who are physically fit, mentally sharp, and capable of working under pressure—qualities that athletes naturally possess.

President Mahama emphasised that this initiative is not only about rewarding athletes but also about leveraging their skills to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the security sector.

The president also encouraged the Sports Ministry to bring back the Security Service Games, where those athletes recruited into the services can compete with each other so talents can be selected to form the various national teams.

As the Interior Ministry begins to implement this directive, Ghanaians are hopeful that it will pave the way for a new era of collaboration between sports and security, empowering the nation’s youth and strengthening its institutions.

With athletes at the forefront, Ghana is poised to create a security force that embodies the same spirit of excellence and patriotism that has defined its sporting heroes.
