“We Weren’t Hungry Under Akufo-Addo”: Kumasi Market Woman Laments Current Economic Struggles

A market woman in Kumasi has sparked conversation with a candid statement comparing the economic conditions under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration to the current situation in Ghana.

Speaking to a local reporter, the trader expressed frustration over the rising cost of living and claimed that life was more bearable during Akufo-Addo’s tenure, especially for those in the market business.

“Former President Akufo-Addo provided free education, and we made good sales at the market over the past eight years, so we weren’t hungry,” she said passionately. “Currently, only the prices of unhealthy food items have been reduced.”

Her comment highlights the growing concern among many Ghanaians about the state of the economy, inflation, and food affordability. According to the trader, nutritious staples such as rice, yam, plantain, vegetables, and meat remain expensive, making it difficult for the average household to maintain a balanced diet.

The Free Senior High School policy, implemented during Akufo-Addo’s administration, was particularly praised in her remarks as a major financial relief for many parents.
