The National House of Chiefs has urged President John Dramani Mahama to intensify efforts to address illegal mining activities otherwise known as galamsey in the country.

Speaking at a durbar during the president’s “Thank You Tour” of the Western North Region, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, President of the National House of Chiefs expressed worry over the health risks posed by galamsey.

“Galamsey is seriously impacting our water bodies and causing illnesses. I know the President has made several commitments to fight this menace. We acknowledge your efforts, but the situation is urgent. We must tackle galamsey now to prevent the outbreak of diseases,” he said.

Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II further pledged the support of traditional authorities in combating the menace.

“We, as chiefs, promise to support you in curbing the menace,” he added.

Despite efforts by successive governments, galamsey continues to wreak havoc on communities in the country, polluting water bodies, endangering livelihoods and the environment.
