A man and a women have been found dead in a Connecticut coastal town after sailing their boat into the darkness from a ritzy oyster restaurant.

The pair, who have not yet been named publicly, were reported missing when they didn’t arrive back in Stratford, Connecticut, on Wednesday night.

They dined at Shell & Bones Oyster Bar and Grill in New Haven, docking nearby, before returning to the boat.

Security cameras filmed them on board the 27ft Sea Hunt vessel, which took off from the marina about 9.30pm.

A phone belonging to one of the missing people pinged a cell tower near the New Haven Harbor west break wall at 9.40pm, the Coast Guard said, but that is the last time either of them was detected alive.

The pair were on a boating trip from Norwalk to Stratford. When they failed to return by Thursday morning a concerned person called the Coast Guard.

The boat was found about 5.20pm the next day, capsized and submerged near the the west break wall in New Haven Harbor, which it is believed to have crashed into.

The missing man and woman were found unresponsive in the same area and recovered by a Connecticut State Police dive team.

    Neither were wearing life jackets.

The Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner pronounced them dead soon afterwards.

Locals wrote online that the break wall could be difficult to see in the dark and boats were known to collide with it.

The Connecticut coats is regularly marred by boat crashes and other accidents, some of them fatal.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Environmental Conservation Police is investigating.
