Ghanaian musician Moliy has revealed that her decision to remain independent and not sign to a record label was intentional from the very beginning of her music journey.

In an interview with Revolt TV, the Shake It to the Max hitmaker, who has been gaining international attention with her music, was asked whether building her career without a label was something she planned or if it just happened naturally.

Moliy explained that she has always been cautious about signing with a record label because of the many negative stories she has heard from other artists in the industry. For her, trust is more important than simply having a deal on paper.

She shared that music is deeply personal to her, and as a result, she prefers to work with people she connects with and trusts.

“Yeah. I’ve always been kind of hesitant to be a label artiste because I’ve just heard so many stories. I always feel like the people I work with; I want to trust them. I want it to feel organic.

I don’t just wanna be a name on a list. Music is very personal to me. So, I think if I did get locked in with a label, I hope it’s something that could be a real, long-lasting, organic relationship,” she said.

Moliy also spoke about the freedom that comes with being an independent artiste. For her, the ability to create without restrictions or someone trying to control her process is the most valuable part.

She noted that being independent means she has to be self-motivated, but that’s something she embraces fully.

“The most freeing part is just getting to do what I want creatively without someone telling me what to do. I don’t like being told what to do. Also, if you’re not pushing yourself, if you’re not putting your foot on the gas, no one is gonna do it for you. That’s what I love the most,” she added.
