A new documentary released by Nigerian media personality Chude Jideonwo has exposed a shocking romance scam in which about 15 Nigerian women, including the daughter of the late actor Mr Ibu, shared experiences about how they were defrauded through TikTok by a man posing as an American suitor.

The documentary, which gained traction on social media on June 25, 2025, saw Jasmine Okafor, daughter of the late Nollywood star Mr Ibu, in particular, recounting how she was scammed out of approximately $13,000 by a man she believed was a genuine romantic partner.

It may be recalled that Jasmine went viral in November 2022 after abruptly ending her marriage of just nine months.

Speaking on this, she explained that the relationship was based on lies and deception, under the guise of love and marriage.

According to Jasmine, the scam began in December 2021 during a TikTok live game, where Jay Love appeared as a generous viewer.

“I was live with someone I met on TikTok, and we were playing a game. Jay Love started sending her gifts to win against me. After the game, he messaged me, and we exchanged numbers. That’s how it all started. We spoke every day. What got me attached was the attention he gave me,” Jasmine shared.

Despite noticing red flags early on, Jasmine said she ignored them because she believed the man’s American identity made him trustworthy.

Jasmine said as their virtual relationship grew, she began entrusting him with her earnings from TikTok, especially funds she needed help withdrawing from PayPal.

She said the trust developed gradually, starting with $100 and eventually growing to $13,000, all of which she saved with him.

“I told him instead of transferring the money, he should bring it in cash when visiting Nigeria,” she explained.

Jasmine further revealed that she even paid for his flight from the U.S. to Nigeria. Upon his arrival, Jay Love presented her with cheap, fake jewellery and chocolates.

She said items she had asked him to purchase, including an iPhone 13 and cosmetics, were never delivered, and he offered excuses for each missing item.

“He said he wanted to propose and even asked to use some of the money I’d given him to buy a ring. But nothing was genuine,” she said.
