The Parliament of Ghana has dismissed a petition lodged against Supreme Court nominee Justice Kweku T Ackaah-Boafo, clearing the path for his long-awaited vetting before the Appointments Committee on Friday, June 20, 2025.

The petition, submitted by self-identified international human rights activist Anthony Kwabenya Rau, had temporarily stalled the vetting process amid a storm of allegations.

Rau accused the Court of Appeal judge of judicial bias, misconduct, and unprofessional behaviour, citing a courtroom incident at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) where he claimed the judge verbally attacked him and questioned his right to represent clients in Ghana.

Rau’s complaint further labeled the nominee as “arrogant, biased, power-drunk, and an abuser of human rights,” and suggested his confirmation would endanger both national and international interests.

He also challenged Justice Ackaah-Boafo’s cultural grounding, pointing to his Canadian background and alleged insensitivity toward Ghanaian norms, particularly age-related customs.

Additionally, the petition raised questions over the nominee’s impartiality in a politically sensitive case involving the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, alleging he declined interest payments before his elevation to the Court of Appeal.

Despite the serious nature of these claims, Parliament’s leadership found no sufficient basis to proceed with the petition. The Appointments Committee has now confirmed that the vetting will go ahead as scheduled.

Justice Ackaah-Boafo is the final nominee put forward by President John Dramani Mahama to face the committee.
