Osafo Maame Florence Gyakyi, a woman who rescued five baby rats at Assin Anyinabrim in the Ashanti Region, has stated that her decision to rear the rodents was inspired by President John Dramani Mahama’s ‘nkoko nkete nkete’ initiative.

According to the woman who works at the Assin Nsuta Senior High School, she intends to rear the rats in a more secured structure for practical purposes for students and to also tap into President John Mahama’s initiative to boost local agriculture.

In a video shared on GHOne’s X page, on June 11, 2025, the rats are seen clinging onto her and scuttling around the shoulders of Osofo Maame Florence.

Narrating how the rodents ended up in her care, she recounted how some students uncovered a rat hole, hounded and killed the mother rat.

“The boys after killing the mother rat, later discovered that there were five baby rats left in the hole. They brought the baby rats to me. Being a mother, I felt terrible about the situation. So, I kept them and fed them with milk.

“They are now four months old and are doing well. Thankfully, this is an agricultural teaching school. So, I want to tap into President Mahama’s ‘nkoko nkete nkete’ initiative. I want to make proper structures to nurture the rats to breed more rats for student’s practicals,” she said.

She called on the government and stakeholders in the agricultural space to support the project.
