After weeks of mounting pressure from some of Ghana’s most influential voices on social media, the Minister of Communication, Digitalisation and Innovation, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has finally responded by announcing a significant increase in data bundle value across all major telecommunications networks in the country, effective July 1, 2025.

Speaking at a press briefing held on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, Hon. Sam George revealed that after intense engagements with the CEOs of Ghana’s telecom giants, his ministry has secured a 10 to 15 percent increase in data value for customers.

“I am pleased to announce that my engagement with the CEOs has resulted in the following specific measures, which are to take effect from Tuesday, 1st of July 2025. A 10% increase in all data bundles currently offered by the networks,” he stated.

The minister further detailed that beyond the general increase, several special data packages that had seen severe reductions in value over the years will be restored.

For instance, AT’s GH¢400 bundle, which previously gave customers 195 gigabytes, will now offer 236 gigabytes.

Telecel, also responding to the directive, will implement a 10% increase in all their data bundles. Additionally, their GH¢400 bundle, previously pegged at 90 gigabytes, will now offer a substantial 250 gigabytes.

As for MTN, the country’s biggest telecom operator, Hon. Sam George announced an even greater increase of 15% in data bundle values. He specifically highlighted the restoration of a previously adjusted package which is the GH¢399 bundle, which was changed to the GH¢350 bundle offering 92.88 gigabytes. He disclosed that it will henceforth be reinstated to 214 gigabytes for GH¢399.

He also cautioned that sanctions will be imposed on any telecom provider that fails to apply the newly approved rates and package restorations from the stipulated date.

This announcement follows intense public scrutiny and backlash, particularly from prominent digital content creators and tech influencers such as Kwadwo Sheldon, Tech In Twi, and several others.

These online voices harshly criticized Hon. Sam George recently for failing to fulfill earlier promises he made prior to the 2024 elections regarding data affordability and improved digital services. Many also called him out for previously launching verbal attacks on his predecessor, Hon. Ursula Owusu, without delivering tangible results of his own since taking office.
